Artist Statement

“I believe that music is truly a way to make the world a better place. Through composing and playing music I feel empowered to create something that will deeply fulfill the artistic and expressive craving that is a part of who I am. I aim to create music that is true to myself, that carries both my voice and the voices of those who have inspired me. My philosophy is that if composing music makes my life better, then it can make someone else’s life better; be it through inspiration or an emotional connection to my art.

Like most musicians, I learn best from trial and error. The most important musical lessons I have had were through said process, and they’ve deeply impacted how I approach composing. Perhaps the most crucial lesson I have learned is to turn off my mental critic while composing. This is something that I have struggled with heavily for many years of my musical life. We all have an inner critic and like all things in life it has a purpose, but sometimes turning it off is a necessary act. I have to turn this off until I’ve finished the writing stages of a song, and let the critic speak again once I move to editing the parts of a song. If every small move made while writing is criticized, then you may never see a composition to completion.

This perspective on composing has had a profound impact on my writing, is deeply reflected in the music I have composed for my projects like Unheard Of or my movie scores such as Secret Admirer (Kenneth Ryan). I truly feel that I have opened the flood gates to my creativity in a way I haven’t been able to since childhood. From there, my creativity, intuition, inner ear, musical knowledge, and most importantly life experiences can take the wheel of crafting my art. In my honest opinion, this is the only way I can achieve my goal of improving and inspiring the world around me through music.”
